Chelate is derived from a Greek word meaning claw. A chelate is a cage-like structure made up of an EDTA molecule which wraps around a divalent metal, such as Zn++,  protecting it from tie-up in the soil or in fertilizer solutions. EDTA gives a divalent metal a net negative charge which allows the metal to move freely in the soil for uptake by plant roots. Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetate (EDTA) is the most common ag chelate, designed primarily for soil application. In high pH, high calcareous soil conditions, iron deficiencies require more sophisticated chelating agents such as HEDTA, DTPA or EDDHA for successful correction. Chelstar chelates are available as liquids for mixing into liquid fertilizers, and also as a dry, water-soluble micro granule.
